I am a bit addicted to essential oils. There is always one or another fired up in the diffuser for the majority of the day and sometimes night.
At first, I used the oils because they smelled so heavenly, but as I learned more about the benefits – like mind, body and soul benefits, well that is when my addiction began in earnest.
Let’s talk about Peppermint Essential Oil – one of my favorites.
Peppermint has been called the world’s oldest medicine and contains numerous minerals and nutrients including manganese, iron, magnesium, calcium, folate, potassium, and copper. It also contains omega-3 fatty acids, Vitamin A and Vitamin C.
The healthful properties of peppermint extend far beyond an immune system boost and relief for respiratory problems. Although, it is known as a “natural antibiotic” and tops my list for flu-busting in the winter season.
Peppermint Essential Oil also increases mental agility and focus and stimulates the mind. Just for that reason alone, I like to burn it :)!
Other Healthful Benefits of Peppermint Essential Oil:
Indigestion: use it for digestive assistance or after a meal (recently in a discussion with a Tea Master, he mentioned that he has a cup of peppermint tea after meals to aid in digestion), nausea, motion sickness, and combined with caraway oil, it has been found to be effective for heartburn. It is also thought to contain an anti-spasmodic. Peppermint is certified as GRAS (“Generally Regarded As Safe” for internal use) by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration and is used in the food industry.
Respiratory Issues: the menthol in peppermint helps clear the bronchial tract and mucus. Diffuse peppermint in a burner, use it in a steam bath to clear congestion, and rub it on your chest. Asthma sufferers could also try peppermint.
Headache and Stress: peppermint refreshes and as an essential oil, the aroma can be a stressbuster. Apply it to the forehead during a stress or migraine headache for relief.
Peppermint also blends well with other Essential Oils. Try it with lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus.
Make sure that you are buying a true Essential Oil. I am a Rep with NYR Organic and the quality of the Peppermint Essential Oil is outstanding and my favorite.
Whole Foods Market also carries good grade Essential Oils.
